Isopropyl alcohol price manufacturers

When sourcing Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA), the price is heavily dictated by purity levels. The most common industrial standard is 99.9% (anhydrous), while medical or electronic grades require even stricter controls on moisture content (typically <0.1%) and non-volatile residue. Buyers should request a Certificate of Analysis (COA) to verify the specific gravity (0.785-0.786 at 20°C) and ensure the product is free from suspended matter.

Procurement costs vary significantly between Industrial Grade, USP/Pharmaceutical Grade, and Electronic Grade. USP Grade commands a premium because it must comply with stringent pharmacopeia standards for use in sanitizers and medical wipes. Electronic Grade is the most expensive due to the need for ultra-low metal ion content to prevent damage to semiconductors. For general cleaning or solvent use, Industrial Grade offers the best economic feasibility.

As a flammable liquid, IPA must adhere to the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for labeling. Suppliers must provide a valid Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) or Safety Data Sheet (SDS). For export, ensure the manufacturer complies with REACH (EU) or TSCA (USA) regulations. Furthermore, since IPA is a Class 3 Flammable Liquid (UN1219), the packaging must meet UN-certified standards for hazardous goods transport.

The price of IPA is highly sensitive to the cost of raw materials, specifically Propylene (via indirect hydration) or Acetone (via hydrogenation). Additionally, global demand surges (such as during health crises) and freight costs for hazardous materials can cause rapid price fluctuations. B2B buyers should monitor crude oil trends and consider long-term contracts to hedge against price volatility.

The biggest risks involve logistical delays and regulatory seizures. Because IPA is a hazardous chemical, any discrepancy in customs declaration or UN packaging codes can lead to heavy fines or the shipment being returned. Another risk is quality degradation; if containers are not properly sealed, the alcohol can absorb atmospheric moisture, lowering its purity and value.

To mitigate financial risk, use secure payment terms such as Letter of Credit (L/C) or Escrow services provided by reputable platforms like Made-in-China.com. Always conduct a factory audit or hire a third-party inspector (like SGS or Intertek) to perform pre-shipment inspections to verify the quantity and chemical composition before final payment is released.

Negotiate based on volume-based pricing tiers. For example, purchasing in ISO tanks is significantly cheaper per kilogram than 200L drums. Ask for tiered discounts (e.g., 5-10% off for full container loads). Additionally, negotiate the Incoterms carefully; while FOB gives you control over shipping, CIF might be easier for buyers who are not experienced in handling the complex documentation required for dangerous goods (DG) shipping.

Shipping IPA requires a Dangerous Goods Declaration. The cargo must be handled by carriers certified to transport Class 3 hazardous materials. Ensure the supplier provides a Dangerous Goods (DG) Certificate and that the packaging includes the correct UN1219 identification marks. For sea freight, the containers must be stowed away from heat sources and reactive chemicals to comply with the IMDG Code.
