New small toys manufacturers

Safety is the paramount concern in the toy industry. You must ensure products comply with ASTM F963 for the US market, EN71 for the EU, and ISO 8124 internationally. Specifically, for 'small toys,' you must conduct Small Parts Testing using a choke tube to prevent choking hazards for children under 3. Additionally, verify that materials are BPA-free, lead-free, and phthalate-non-toxic by requesting CPC (Children's Product Certificate) or CE Declaration of Conformity from the supplier.

Request a pre-production sample to perform 'abuse testing,' which includes tension tests, drop tests, and torque tests to ensure no small components break off easily. For electronic or mechanical toys, check the battery compartment security (it should require a tool to open) and the smoothness of edges to avoid laceration risks. High-quality suppliers on Made-in-China.com often provide third-party inspection reports from agencies like SGS or Intertek.

Current market drivers include Eco-friendly materials (biodegradable plastics or FSC-certified wood), STEM-based educational miniatures, and sensory/fidget toys. 'Blind box' collectibles and DIY assembly kits are also seeing high growth. When sourcing, look for unique IP designs or patented mechanisms to avoid intellectual property infringements while maintaining a competitive edge.

For small toys, packaging volume significantly affects shipping costs. Opt for retail-ready blister packs or compact color boxes that maximize container space. Ensure the packaging includes mandatory warning labels (e.g., 'Warning: Choking Hazard') in the language of the destination country. Customized OEM packaging can increase brand value but usually requires a higher MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity), typically starting at 1,000–3,000 units.

The primary risks include Intellectual Property (IP) infringement, where toys may inadvertently mimic copyrighted characters, leading to customs seizures. Another risk is material substitution, where a supplier uses cheaper, non-compliant plastics in the bulk run compared to the sample. To mitigate this, use Trade Assurance services and hire a third-party inspector to verify the cargo before the final payment is released.

Focus on tiered pricing based on volume; for small toys, a 10,000-unit order can often reduce the unit price by 15-25% compared to the base MOQ. Negotiate for favorable payment terms such as a 30% deposit and 70% balance after inspection. Always clarify Incoterms (e.g., FOB vs. DDP) early to avoid hidden logistics costs. For long-term partnerships, ask for free mold maintenance or exclusive rights to specific designs in your region.

Small toys are often lightweight but high-volume. For small batches, Air Express (DHL/FedEx) is fast but expensive. For bulk, Sea Freight (LCL or FCL) is the most economical. Ensure your freight forwarder is experienced in Toy Customs Clearance, as toys are 'high-risk' categories for customs inspections. Ensure all HS Codes (typically Chapter 95) are correctly declared to avoid delays and fines.

Always conduct transactions through secured payment channels provided by reputable platforms like Made-in-China.com. Avoid direct wire transfers to private bank accounts. Verify the supplier's Business License and Audit Reports on the platform. Look for 'Audited Suppliers' who have undergone on-site verification by independent third parties to ensure they have the manufacturing capacity they claim.
