Velvet manufacturers

When sourcing velvet, the primary quality indicator is the GSM (Grams per Square Meter); higher weight typically signifies better density and durability. For upholstery, ensure the fabric passes the Martindale Rub Test with a rating of at least 20,000 to 40,000 cycles. Additionally, check for colorfastness to light and rubbing (ISO 105-X12) to prevent premature fading, and verify if the pile is crush-resistant to maintain its aesthetic appeal under pressure.

Velvet can be made from various fibers: Silk velvet offers maximum luxury but is delicate; Cotton velvet is breathable and durable for apparel; Polyester (Synthetic) velvet is the most popular for cross-border trade due to its high stain resistance, affordability, and wrinkle-free properties. For specialized needs, look for FR (Flame Retardant) treated velvet for hospitality projects or water-repellent coatings for high-traffic furniture.

For the EU market, velvet must comply with REACH regulations regarding harmful chemicals and Azo dyes. For the US market, ensure the fabric meets OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for skin safety and CPAI-84 or NFPA 701 if the fabric is intended for commercial curtains or upholstery. Always request third-party lab test reports from suppliers on Made-in-China.com to verify these claims.

Velvet is prone to dye lot variations. To mitigate this, require the supplier to provide a Lab Dip (A/B/C samples) for approval before mass production. For large-scale procurement, insist that the entire order is produced in a single dye vat to ensure 100% color matching across all rolls, and use the Pantone TCX/TPG color system for precise communication.

The biggest risk is permanent creasing or 'bruising' of the pile during transit. Velvet should never be folded; it must be rolled on strong paper tubes and wrapped in double-layer plastic packaging. For high-end velvet, specify 'Suspended Box' packing or 'Hanging Garment' containers to ensure the fabric arrives without pressure marks.

Focus on the Total Landed Cost rather than just the FOB price. Negotiate for free sample yardage (1-3 meters) to test the 'hand-feel' and drape. If purchasing in bulk, ask for a 5-10% discount on orders exceeding 1,000 meters, and clarify the wastage allowance (usually 1-3%) for defects found within the rolls.

Utilize the Secured Trading services on Made-in-China.com to protect your payment. Never pay 100% upfront; a standard 30% deposit and 70% balance against the Bill of Lading (B/L) is recommended. Hire a third-party inspection agency to perform a 'Piece-to-Piece' inspection or a random '10% Roll Check' before the final payment is released.

Check the HS Code (typically 5801 for woven pile fabrics) to determine the specific import duties in your country. Be aware of Anti-Dumping Duties (ADD) that some regions apply to Chinese polyester textiles. Ensure the supplier provides a Certificate of Origin (CO), which may help in reducing tariffs under specific Free Trade Agreements.
